New Paths for Women in IT
Kim Stevenson, who after serving as Intel CIO was promoted to the position Chief Operating Officer of its Client, IoT and System Architecture Group, has been appointed as Senior Vice President and General Manager of Data Center Infrastructure at Lenovo starting May 1, 2017. Stevenson will report to Kirk Skaugen, executive vice president & president, Data Center Group.
For example, the three women Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has promoted to new senior roles. Jaya Kolhatkar, who joined Wal-Mart in 2013 through its acquisition of predictive analytics firm Inkiru Inc., is now senior vice president of global data and analytics platform; Fiona Tan, who joined Wal-Mart in 2014 and had been vice president of engineering in the company’s international group, is now senior vice president of U.S. customer technology; and Jae Evans was promoted to vice president of global technical engineering and operations, continuing to be responsible for core infrastructure services.
With the growing importance of information technology, senior executives from various functions are making IT a critical milestone on their career paths. American International Group (AIG) has appointed Martha Gallo as CIO, succeeding Philip Fasano who left to pursue other opportunities. Gallo previously served as AIG’s Chief Auditor. In an internal memo sent to AIG employees, Peter D. Hancock, President and CEO, affirmed the company’s deep commitment to investing in the company’s technology platforms and to what he characterized as “great work” being done by AIG’s global technology organization. “Technology is a vital piece of delivering AIG’s full capabilities and is an area that I am particularly passionate about,” said Hancock.
The growing importance of information technology also means that IT executives are now increasingly appointed to board of directors, a trend that adds a new dimension to their careers. Jessica Denecour, CIO of Varian Medical Systems Inc., has joined the board of MobileIron Inc., an IT security vendor. Denecour, who has held senior technology management positions at Hewlett-Packard Co. and Agilent Technologies, told CIO Journal that getting more women, from various disciplines, into board seats is a personal mission. Early last year, she co-founded a nonprofit, Athena Alliance, to help women executives connect to companies with open board positions. “I believe in diversity in gender and ethnicity on boards because you make better business decisions in a group like that,” said Denecour.
For a number of years Straight Talk has been serving as a platform for publishing stories about the experiences of women IT leaders, told in their own voices. We have now published a special issue of CIO Straight Talk magazine dedicated to lessons learned in the exemplary careers of 14 of these role models.
