Subway Taps New Exec to Deliver a New Digital Experience

Fast food restaurant chain, Subway has appointed Donagh Herlihy as Global Chief Digital and Information Officer. In his new role, Herlihy will oversee the company’s global technology teams and initiatives to deliver modern, timely and effective platforms for Subway franchisees and guests.

"I am excited to join Subway and be a part of enhancing the brand's digital experience, from the way we interact with our guests to how we help our global network of franchisees operate their businesses," said Herlihy. "I Iook forward to working alongside the amazing team to build a better Subway through digital innovation." He joins Subway as digital orders at most restaurants are skyrocketing. In the year ending March 2021, which covers a full year since the start of the pandemic, restaurant digital orders grew 124 percent compared to the previous year, according to NPD group.

Herlihy has more than 20 years of experience in leading digital and and e-commerce teams in the food, retail and restaurant industries. Previously, he held technology, digital and e-commerce executive roles at companies like Bloomin’ Brands, Avon Products and the Wrigley Company. His expertise includes digital innovation and strategy, guest-facing technology and international growth.

In other recent appointments and career moves:

Eli Lilly has appointed Diogo Rau as senior vice-president and Chief Information and Digital officer. Rau succeeds Aarti Shah, who is retiring after 27 years at the company. Rau most recently worked as the top executive of information technology for retail and online stores at Apple, Inc. During his 10 years at Apple, he led the development and implementation of the technology supporting the Apple Online Store and Apple retail stores, including the e-commerce platform, mobile point of sale, the Apple Store App, and systems used by store team members. Prior to joining Apple, Rau was a partner with McKinsey & Company, where he led the North America IT organization and governance practice, and where he frequently presented to CIO forums and technology conferences. Rau began his career as a consultant at A.T. Kearney and later founded GiftGateway, a software company that brought rewards and recognition online. 

Johnson Controls has appointed Vijay Sankaran as vice president and CTO, a new role aimed at accelerating product software engineering development and expanding customer solutions through the OpenBlue digital platform. He will report to George Oliver, Johnson Controls chairman and CEO and software engineering team members from across Johnson Controls global portfolio reporting to his newly created organization. Sankaran's team will accelerate and unify the product software engineering development efforts creating common software architecture to further drive the enterprise software technology strategy. Previously he has held leadership roles in technology transformation across a spectrum of industries and most recently was Chief Information Officer and Head of Innovation at TD Ameritrade, with responsibility for digital strategy, customer platforms, software engineering, technology operations, cybersecurity, data management and analytics, and enterprise innovation.

Mid-Atlantic food retailer, Weis Markets has promoted Greg Zeh to Senior Vice President and CIO. Zeh joined Weis Markets as Vice President and CIO in 2016. Since then, he has overseen the reorganization of its Information Technology department. He also led the development and implementation of IT solutions that generated business value and engaging customer experiences while overseeing the management of technology risks. Zeh will continue to oversee the day-to-day activities of the Company’s Information Technology team, while adding new responsibilities for enterprise data and analytics and working cross-functionally with its senior leadership on the development and execution of key strategic goals and initiatives. He will continue to report to Kurt Schertle, Weis Markets’ COO.

Home lending technology provider, Roostify has appointed Bill Elderton as CTO. He will oversee design, development, and execution of the company's technology roadmap. An 18-year industry veteran specializing in building and growing high-performing product and engineering teams, Elderton comes to Roostify from Q2, a digital solutions provider for financial services, where he served the past six years as Senior Vice President of Development and Engineering. At Q2, he most recently led the build of its 'Banking as a Service' platform. Before that, he scaled Q2's core digital banking offering to enable community and regional banks to compete with megabanks.
