CIO, CDO, and CTO All Rolled Into One Position
Over three-quarters of CIOs agree with the statement that their role is viewed by the board and the CEO as more of a revenue generator than a cost center, according to a recent survey conducted by Korn/Ferry International. As a result, the position of CIO is now frequently enlarged to include overseeing digital initiatives and exploring new technologies.
National Grid PLC has appointed Adriana Karaboutis to the newly created position of chief information and digital officer, reporting to CEO John Pettigrew. Karaboutis will be responsible for both IT operations and overall digital strategy. She will also oversee both cybersecurity and physical security at the natural-gas and electricity utility.
Most recently, Karaboutis was executive vice president of technology, business solutions, and corporate affairs at Biogen Inc. During her tenure there, she wrote for Straight Talk: “I’ve held technology leadership positions in three industries: automotive, computing, and now biotechnology… the most important thing to learn in whatever industry or business you’re in is how to apply technology to make a difference to end customers.” Regarding the new industry she is adding to her deep and broad executive portfolio, Karaboutis told CIO Journal: “Bill Gates recently said that energy would be in his top three career choices if he were starting all over again — I agree.”
Another example of combining the CIO, CDO, and CTO roles into one position—from the executive appointments made in July 2017—is of former Wal-Mart’s CIO Karenann Terrell. GlaxoSmithKline has appointed Ms. Terrell to the newly created position of chief digital and technology officer, reporting to CEO Emma Walmsley.
