CVS CIO steps down ahead of Aetna merger

Stephen J. Gold, CIO of CVS Healthcare Corp, resigned two weeks after the company announced that it was acquiring health insurer Aetna Inc. for $69 billion.

According to CVS, his resignation was not related to CVS’s agreement to acquire Aetna — deal that combines the largest US drugstore chain with the third-biggest health insurer. He resigned to “pursue professional opportunities outside CVS Health,’” the company spokesman told Wall Street Journal. Until a new CIO is appointed, the company's IT will report to COO Jon Roberts.

Gold began working as CVS Health's CIO in 2012 and was appointed executive vice president - technology and operations innovation three years later. Prior to joining the company, he was Senior Vice President and CIO of software firm Avaya from 2010 to 2012.

“Gold has one of the best resumes in IT”, according to Straight Talk featured blogger Peter High. “I started my career as a systems programmer and I worked through the ranks and basically have done every job of every person in an IT organization.  What that allows me to do is to understand and to empathize with what each of my staff does”, Gold elaborated his CIO leadership strategy during the interview. That’s not all. He founded the “first and the largest PBM internet pharmacy in the world at Medco” and worked as CIO as well as CTO of GSI Commerce. He explained, “And what that has allowed me to do is to have a fairly unique perspective. A lot of CIOs are either technologists or business leaders.  But in the CIO world, if you have a mixture of both you’re more aligned with the strategic business functions.”
