From SAP to Qantas Airways, a New CIO

Susan Doniz is the new CIO at Qantas Airways, taking over from Luc Hennekens, who became CIO at Airbus in September, after holding the top IT post at Qantas for the past three years. “Qantas isn’t just an iconic company, it’s one with a long history of embracing new technology. I’m really excited to taking up the CIO role and I’m looking forward to working on the next wave of opportunities that digital change is opening up for airlines and their passengers,” Doniz said in a prepared statement.

Previously, Doniz was chief expert, Office of the Global CEO at SAP, where she worked on projects with senior leaders at the software firm’s biggest customers. Before that she was CIO at AIMIA, a data analytics company that evolved from Aeroplan, Air Canada’s former loyalty business. She has also held CIO and executive positions with Procter & Gamble.

Qantas is in the midst of a significant digital transformation which includes moving IT to the cloud, the introduction of high-speed inflight wi-fi, new mobile tools and services for customers and staff, and a growing focus on finding insights in big data. Other senior tech executives leading a digital transformation are Nuria Simo at Inter-American Development Bank, Michael Baresich at Ally Financial, David Thompson at Western Union, Michelle McKenna-Doyle at the National Football League (NFL), and Brian Shield at the Boston Red Sox.

In other recent appointments and career moves:

Staples has promoted Faisal Masud to the position of CTO, combining responsibility for e-commerce with the CIO role, and reporting to CEO and President Shira Goodman. Masud joined Staples three years ago as executive vice president of e-commerce and before that was vice president and general manager at Groupon and has held management positions at eBay and Amazon.

Warner Music Group (WMG) has appointed Ralph Munsen as CIO and Vinnie Freda as its first chief data officer (CDO), reporting to CEO Steve Cooper. Munsen comes to WMG with 20 years of media and entertainment experience, including senior technology positions at Accenture, EMI Music, Clear Channel/ iHeartMedia, and Hachette Book Group. Freda Hs served as EVP of Digital Logistics and Business Services at Universal Music Group and president and COO of INgrooves Music Group.

Deutsche Bank has appointed Elly Hardwick as Head of Innovation and Philip Milne as CTO for Innovation, reporting to JP Rangaswami, Chief Data Officer, Head of Strategy and Innovation for the Chief Operating Office. Previously, Hardwick was CEO of Credit Benchmark and before that she served as Global Head of Strategy, Investment and Advisory at Thomson Reuters. Milne was most recently CEO and Founder of a virtual reality start-up in Silicon Valley and before that a member of the founding teams that created the Android platform at Google and the Java platform at Sun Microsystems.

Electrolux has promoted JP Iversen to the position of CIO, reporting to the President and CEO Jonas Samuelson. Iversen joined Electrolux in 2001 and has held various high-level positions within the IT organization. Prior to this, he worked for Deloitte Consulting and PepsiCo.

QVC has promoted Todd Sprinkle to the position of CIO, reporting to Mike George, President and CEO.   Sprinkle held various leadership roles with QVC since joining in 2007 and before that spent 12 years in senior-level roles at Turner Broadcasting.

Avnet Inc. has appointed Kevin Summers as CIO. Previously, Summers has led IT at companies in several industries, including Lowe’s Cos., Whirlpool Corp., and Coca-Cola Co.

BlackBerry has appointed Rear Admiral Robert "Bob" E. Day, Jr., U.S. Coast Guard (Ret.) as the leader of the company's forthcoming federal Cybersecurity Operations Center (CSOC) and product FedRAMP initiatives. Day has a distinguished 34-year career in Federal information technology and cybersecurity. His tenure at the Coast Guard included a variety of senior staff and command positions, with five years served as CIO and Commander of Coast Guard Cyber Command.


USANA Health Sciences has appointed Walter Noot as CIO.

Boyd Gaming has promoted Blake Rampmaier has been promoted from Vice President, IT Operations, to CIO.

London, Emgland-based Colt Technology Services has appointed TS Narayanan as Vice President and CIO.

Oberkochen, Germany-based Zeiss International has promoted Michael Belko from Vice President, IT Solution Center, to Senior Vice President, Corporate IT.

Blackpool, England-based 1st Stop Group has appointed Daniel Pass as Director, Information Technology.

Turner Industries Group has promoted Durel Braud from Director, Information Technology, to CIO.

Mannheim, Germany-based Bilfinger has appointed Helge-Karsten Lauterbach as CIO.

Analogic Corporation has promoted Lennox Brown from Vice President, Global Information Technology, to CIO.

Malmö, Sweden-based Sigma has appointed Christian Malmberg as Head of IT & Processes.

University of Wisconsin – Stout has appointed Suzanne Traxler as CIO.
